Pastor
Avon Carlson, 41, was born and raised in San Bernardino, California.
He graduated from Southern California College, an Assemblies of God
institution, in 1978 with a degree in Biblical Studies. Pastor Carlson
is the host of the syndicated radio talk show "Pentecostal
Perspectives." He also serves as the President of The Society for
the Universal Gospel. The following is an interview Adult Christianity
did with Carlson in December, 1998. This interview originally
appeared, and still continues to appear, at Adult
Christianity, which is one of the best sites on the internet for
edgy, high-concept, bold thinking about religion. Miss Poppy of Adult
Christianity and Reverend Looper are very good friends.
Adult Christianity (AC): Pastor, you have been quoted as saying that those on other planets, namely aliens, need to be reached with the gospel. Could you comment on that? Pastor Avon Carlson (PAC): Indeed. When our Lord commanded us to take the gospel into all the world, he surely didn't mean that we should stop at the boundaries of our own atmosphere. The "world" is a metaphor for the universe. AC: But many in the evangelical and fundamentalist communities are convinced that aliens and flying saucers are an end time deception of Satan. PAC: And that same mind set once held that non-Western peoples were utter savages, incapable of being redeemed. Could it be that Satan is deceiving us about the nature of sentient beings on other planets? AC: Why would the Devil do such a thing? PAC: Our Lord stated that the end would not come until the gospel had been preached to ever creature. To the extent that we run in fear from aliens, that we do not bring them the gospel, we delay the return of our Lord. AC: How do you propose to bring the gospel to those on distant planets? PAC: By correcting the thought of those in the world of science and government responsible for SETI, VLA, the NASA Deep Space Network, and the Big Ear Observatory. Basically, all of these organizations operate linked, wide array dish antennas in a search for life on other planets. They both listen for intelligent radio signals and transmit "universal" mathematical formulas in an attempt to get another civilization to respond. But such thinking is limited by the Drake Equation which states that any search for intelligent life on other planets can only be a search for manifestations of technology, such as radio waves containing mathematical codes. What I propose to do is to transmit the Gospel of John into space and wait for a reply. I would speak to the heart of the fallen universe rather than the mind. AC: C. S. Lewis suggested that God had quarantined earth, the "silent planet," using time and space because of the sin that resides in the heart of man. Yet you appear to be saying that Adam's transgression affected the entire cosmos. PAC: Oh, most definitely. The Fall was a cosmic Event. I don't mean to sound geocentric, but God did create man first upon the earth. AC: So if all intelligent life came from earth, how did it get to other planets? PAC: Satan kidnapped fallen humans and took them to other planets. AC: Can you offer any proof, biblical or otherwise, for your assertion? PAC: First, it is an inference drawn from the Satanically controlled popular media. Satan has deceived the ufologists into trying to convince people that human life began on other planets. As Satan is the father of all lies, anything is says in untrue. Hence, life began on this planet and was carried to other planets. Conversely, Satan took dinosaurs from other planets and transported them to earth to confuse the minds of man. It is a very complex Satanic plot whose tentacles are even now wrapped firmly around the government of the United States and the liberal media.
