Although you can start your driving lessons as soon as your provisional driving licence becomes valid, you cannot book the driving test until you have passed the theory test.

The Driving Test is split into two parts:
A computerised Theory Test of mainly multiple choice questions together with a video-based Hazard Perception Test.
A Practical Test of your driving.
You must pass both parts before you can apply for a full driving licence.

More information about the Theory and Practical tests can be found at the DSA website.
The cost of the theory test is currently £20.50 and of the practical test is £39.00 (on weekdays) or £48.00 (on Saturday and weekday evenings). You can book your theory test either by telephoning 0870 0101 372 or by filling out the form (application for a driving theory test) available from the DSA; you can book your practical test

You can book your theory test to take place on or shortly after your seventeenth birthday.

Until the day you pass the practical part of the Driving Test you are not allowed to drive on your own.
