Presidents October Message
Welcome to the beginning of a new and exciting year for the Northern Virginia Chapter of AORN.
As we feel the changes in temperature and see the leaves change color it reminds me that summer is coming to an end and fall is upon us. It also indicates that we as members of the the Northern virginia Chapter of AORN need to mark our calendars for the second Monday of the month and attend our chapter meetings. The chapter meetings are a time that we take out of our busy schedules to network with friends and new acquaintances and have the opppourtunity to learn something new. I hope that all of you can come to the next meeeting.
The board has not wasted away the lazy days of summer drinking lemonade and sitting by the pool. We had our transition board meeting at the end of June and along with great food we have developed ideas for educational offerings and chapter awards. You will be hearing more about the chapter awards at the first chapter meeting. I received my first mailing from AORN and I want to pass on what President Betty Shultz has developed as goals for our organization for the coming year.
• Provide members with opportunities to grow as chapter members and individuals.
• Increase the number of states that require an RN to circulate on all surgical procedures.
• Expand recruitment and retention of AORN members.
• Expand relationships with perioperative colleagues.
• Continue to improve communications within AORN and with the members.
• Use the International Resource Committee and the AORN Foundation to their fullest capacity.
• Establish a coalition of students and young nurses to discuss their needs in AORN.
• Continue to expand the Patient Safety First program.
Do not forget to start planning for
The 51St AORN Congress in San Diego March 21 thru the 25, 2004.
We have been informed that we will be able to send 10 delegates to Congress to represent our chapter.

Sincerely,
Steve Balog
