Civil War Memorial

Within Mountain Grove Cemetery is the "Pro Patria" Civil War Memorial, sculpted by Paul W. Morris. "Pro Patria" in Latin means "For One's Country", it is from the Roman poet Virgil's line, "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" which translates to, "It is sweet and proper to die for one's country." (The line "Dulce et Decorum est" was later the title of a poem by Wilfred Owen, detailing the traumatic experiences of soldiers in World War I. Owen refers to the quote as "the old lie." He was killed in action a week prior to the war's end.) Behind the Mountain Grove "Pro Patria" memorial are rows of Civil War graves bordered by mounds of cannonballs. One hundred and fifty (150) names are inscribed on the memorial: 144 soldiers and 6 sailors.
