Savannah, Georgia

Interesting Facts About Savannah:

Our last stop on our journey is Georgia's largest port, Savannah.

It boasts some of the state's oldest houses, largest oak trees, and best
restaurants. Having lived in Savannah for a time, there were people and places we wanted to visit.

One of our stops was historic downtown Savannah and River Street.

The Savannah River is one of Georgia's largest waterways.

For lunch, we stopped in at the Pirate's House, which is one short block from the river.
It has been welcoming visitors since 1753. At one time it was a rendezvous for
blood-thirsty pirates and sailors of the Seven Seas. Visitors can now tour the building which has
lots of ghost stories. One is about the blocked stairwell. Legend has it that the stairwell is an entrance to a
tunnel located under the rum cellar. The tunnel was an underground passageway from the restaurant to the river.
It is told that many sailors that were heavy into
drink were prey for the pirates. They were drugged and carried through the tunnel
onto awaiting pirate ships, which were short-handed and looking to increase their crews.

Another must see in Savannah is "The Magistic Oak". Live oak
trees, the state tree, can be found in abundance throughout the city.
This particular tree can be found in a charming, little neighborhood.
This is the largest Live Oak found in the south. It is over 350 years old.
