Songs are a vital part of Tolkien's work. They give great insight to the history of Middle-Earth without telling a massive story. It makes the characters more interesting, and makes the reader believe that the world he has created is actually real. Personally, my favorite songs are from the Shire, they seem to capture the feeling of the novels.
