A Charming, Funny Love Story
I really enjoyed Something's Gotta Give. It's a funny story of love that proves it doesn't matter how old you are. True love can strike when you'd least expect it. Such is the case for Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson), who's been dating women in their 20's for about 50 years. He's a ladies man to the nth degree, and when he arrives at a Hampton beach house with the young Marin (Amanda Peet), he thinks it's going to stay that way for the rest of his life. Things go a bit awry, however, when Marin's mother, playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) shows up at the beach house to finish her play. She's more than a little upset to find Harry here, but she allows Marin to do as she will. As Marin and Harry begin to fool around for the first time, Harry suffers a heart attack, and is taken to a hospital, where is cared for by the young doctor Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves). This is where the love triangle begins, as Julian tells Harry that he must stay with Erica. Slowly but surely, Erica and Harry begin to like each other more and more, all the while Julian is courting the older Erica.
In a movie like this, performances are crucial so that we care about all the characters. Well, Jack is basically playing Jack so his performance is great as usual. Diane Keaton is great as well. She portrays all her awkardness with the grace of a real 16 year old girl on her first date. Keanu Reeves is stiff as usual, but thankfully he has a few clever lines that make his character interesting. He seems really devoted to Erica from the moment they meet. If it wasn't for the clever writing done by Nancy Meyers, we'd have another Neo on our hands. Thankfully, this isn't the case.
Something's Gotta Give is a nice love story that is relatively innocent, because even in the sex scene, there is too much awkardnes between the two characters to make it seem mature. It's like two people that are in love for the first time in their life, and it's really nice to see something like that nowadays.
