Brains... This Movie Has None
If Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil videogame series, were dead, he'd be rolling over in his grave. But since he isn't, he's probably combining some magnum rounds with his magnum and going off in search of Alexander Witt, the director of this "movie". If it were a game, it would no doubt be a part of the Survivor series, and a few months after release, Capcom would claim that it had nothing to do with the actual story to save a little face. But it is not a game. It is a joke, however, because despite some vague references here and there, this is simply not Resident Evil.
In the first movie, there was an accident in an underground lab, and the T-Virus was released. This turned all the scientists into zombies. There was a survivor and her name was Alice. Now, Umbrella (the big evil corporation responsible for the mess) have re-opened it, and unleashed the virus upon Raccoon City, turned it into hell on earth. Alice is alive of course, and armed to the teeth because this isn't about horror anymore. Also alive is Jill Valentine, the star of the game series. Here, she gets second billing, and has literally no personality. They may have well not even given her a name. This angers me. Nobody but nobody saves Jill Valentine unless their name is Barry Burton or Chris Redfield. Or maybe Carlos, another hero from the games. Here, he is just as flat, and again, doesn't even need a name. I have never seen such dumb acting in a movie before, basically, there is no acting. It's just a flurry of hard to see action. You know something is happening, but you can't see it. Take the 100 Smith's scene from The Matrix Reloaded. Now zoom in so all you can see is Neo's head and torso. Not very entertaining is it? This movie is full of scenes like that.
Don't get me on the most important character in the movie, Alice, who just happens to be the most unlikable. By the end of the movie, I was waiting for her to die so Jill could become the leader. She is harsh with no characteristics to make up for it whatsoever. And she always seems to come out of nowhere. How did she get all the way across the city after a brutal fight with a killing machine sent out to get her? Why does she crash her motorcycle through a stained-glass building? How does she know what's on the other side.
The movie rushes far too quickly to put anything cohesive together. There was more cinematographic beauty in the first five minutes of the game Resident Evil 3 than there was in this entire movie. By the end of the movie, there are a million things you could be asking yourself. The answers don't really matter though. We never find out anything about Umbrella, other than that they're evil. Ooooh scary. This movie is a disgrace to the Resident Evil name. It isn't scary, it isn't gory, the settings are only moderately interesting, and the story is a... I'm sorry, there is no story. Just a blur of special effects that are downright bad. The only thing this movie did right was make Jill and the Nemesis look exactly like their gaming world counterparts. Bravo, what happened to the rest of the movie?
Go play the games.
