He Has a Chainsaw This Time
Sam Raimi obviously had a bigger budget to work with this time, and this is shown. Evil Dead 2 isn't nearly as scary or violent as the first one, but it is funnier and has some cool creature effects. Bruce Campbell does a great job once again, and has some of the best one-liners to date.
For those unfamiliar with the setup, this is basically a remake of the original Evil Dead. Why the director would remake his own movie is beyond me, but Raimi wanted to, and so he did. This time, only Ash and his girlfriend visit the cabin where the book of the Dead is found. After the tape recorder chants the passage, the evil is unleashed and Ash is back in it once again. The plot is a little more grandiose this time around, but it allows for a lot of cool scenes. For instance, his hand becomes possessed, and the only way to get rid of it is to saw it off with a chainsaw. While screaming and laughing maniacally while blood splatters all over his face. This is about as classic as you can get as far as horror movies go.
While the first film relied on a scare factor and lots of violence, this film drifts away from the scare factor, and puts together comedy with violence, and it works. We see beheadings, limbs flying and blood gushing out of the walls. We also hear Ash making jokes every five minutes, but he never gets boring. These one-liners are as bad as they come, but they're hilarious in they're own right. After attaching a chainsaw to his severed hand and slinging a shotgun over his back, he says "groovy." It may seem out of place, but it's very funny.
So, while this may not be a horror movie in the true sense of the genre, it is still a good movie, and probably the best out of the whole trilogy.
