In Memory of Dorothy Hackett McGuire
June 14, 1918 - September 13, 2001
In 1973 while watching my favorite soap opera,
"The Young & The Restless", I spotted a newcomer
her name was Cora Miller, mother of Victor Newman.
The last day I saw her on the soap was the day she died
on the program at Christmastime. I remember seeing
her reflection in the Christmas Tree. Just
about every movie I was watching after that her
name appeared in the credits and I ended up watching.
Each time growing fonder and fonder of her acting.
My favorite movie of all was "Summer Place".
It was through that movie that I fell in love with
the song "Summer Place". To this day, is my favorite
all time song. Unfortunately out of the 45 films
Dorothy starred in, I have only seen a select few.
"Enchanted Cottage" with Robert Young and "Ole Yeller".
One thing that I really admired about Dorothy was her beauty.
She seemed to glow no matter what her character
portrayed. Dorothy was born in Omaha, Nebraska.
Her stage debut came at the age of 13 in
"A Kiss for Cinderella". She married John Swope, a
famous photographer for Life Magazine and had two
children, Topo Swope an actress and Mark Swope
artist and photographer.
When I sat down to do a bit of research on Dorothy for this page,
I was sadden to learn that the had passed on
September 21, 2001 and I had not heard about it.
One thing that I am eternally grateful for was
the fact that I actually wrote to Dorothy telling
her about how I loved her acting and her short stay
on "The Young & The Restless" and in return
she sent me a home photograph of her leaving her
home signed by her to myself. I will always cherish her.

This is the picture she sent me autographed.
Upon my research I learned that Dorothy Hackett McGuire (Swope)
passed away from heart failure September 21, 2001.
It was also told that she had broken a
leg three weeks prior to her fatal fete. May she
rest in peace - Never forgotten.
