Barbra Joan Streisand

Barbra Joan Streisand was born April 24, 1942
in Brooklyn, New York to Diana and Emanuel
Streisand.

Her father died when Barbra was just 15 months old and her
mother was so grief stricken that there was little
attention paid to her children. Diana met Louis and
became pregnant by him. At this time, they were
living with Diana's parents who tossed them out
with the news of the pregnancy. Louis didn't marry
until the nineth month of the pregnancy
and even then took no financial responsibility
for his family which caused tension along with
verbal and physical abuse to the children.

In April 1956, Barbra went to Manhattan for her fourteenth
birthday to see "The Diary of Anne Frank". she
was so moved that she knew she wanted to be
an actress and started auditioning. At age 17, she
received her first acting job in Manhattan and was
opposite Joan Rivers in the play "Driftwood",
but it was her singing career that was taking
off. In 1962 she signed a contract with Columbia
Records. Her debut album "The Barbra Streisand Album"
became the nation's top-selling record by a
female vocalist. The album won her two grammy
awards one being album of the year and she was the
youngest artist to have won that at that time.
Barbra then signed a 10 year contract with CBS TV
to produce and star in TV specials. Her first special
"My Name is Barbra" earned her 5 Emmy awards.
"Funny Girl" was released by Columbia shortly after.

After several spectacular films, in 1976 "A Star is Born" was
released winning Barbra an Academy Award for "Evergreen".
Barbra was the first woman to ever win this
award. "Yentl" took 14 years to develop and was
Barbra's first directoral debut. "Yentl" received
four 1984 Academy Award Nominations.

Barbra received an honorary degree - Doctor of Humane Letters
from Brandeis University in 1995 for being the
only artist to earn an Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Golden
Globe, Cable Ace and Peabody Awards.

Her Biography was released on October 1997 by Guttman Associates
"About Barbra Streisand". Barbra was married

produced son Jason Emmanuel Gould born December
29, 1966. After the divorce Barbra had known men
