FOLKTALES FROM NEPAL

A Crow with Raspy Voice

Some of the crows that are found in the mountains of Nepal have a raspy voice which is different from the usual voice of crows. They are called Ganda Crow which means a crow having a raspy voice. Here is a story of how the voice of the crow turned to Ganda.

Once a small bird of Chupi family had hatched some babies in the nest. A clever crow, finding no one around, slipped into the nest and opened his mouth to kill the baby. The chick of the Chupi bird cried and said, "Don't kill me with that dirty beak. Please go to the river and wash your beak and come back to kill me." Therefore, the crow went to the river to clean his beak. The river did not let him dip his beak. The river said, " Your beak is so dirty. Bring a clay pot and get water in it to wash your beak."

The crow then went to get clay to make a clay pot. The crow explained to the clay the purpose of his coming. The clay said, "Don't use your dirty beak to dig me out. If you want to make a pot out of me, bring a small spade and dig me out."

The poor crow was very tired by then. He flew from there to a blacksmithÕs workshop and said, " O brother, please make a small spade for me. I will dig out clay with it. Then I will make a clay pot. I will get water from the river to wash my dirty beak. Then I will be able to kill and eat the chicks of the Chupi bird."

The blacksmith thought for a while and said, "What color do you like, red or black?" The crow asked for the red one. The blacksmith then heated an iron rod until it was red-hot and asked the crow to open his mouth. When the crow opened his mouth, he inserted the iron rod deep into his throat. The throat of the crow was burned very severely. That caused the voice of the crow to be Ganda.

The crows with raspy voices that are found today are his grandchildren.
