gibson praise came to the attention of agents mulder and scully after there was an assassination attempt made on him during a chess tournament. the 12 year old chess prodigy owed his success to his ability to read minds, and it was this ability that allowed him to sense the intention of his would-be assassin, and avoid the trajectory of the bullet. later tests confirmed this suspicion of agent mulder's, and revealed him to be experiencing an extraordinarily high level of activity in an area of the brain known as the "god module." hence, mulder and scully both came to believe that the key to all that was in the x files could be found through the identification of those trying to kill gibson and their motives.

and indeed, gibson praise was found to be genetic proof of the existence of extra-terrestrials, possessing functional 'junk DNA' of alien origin. for this reason he is hunted down by the syndicate who, in order to carry out their operations in secret, want to deny the existence of extra-terrestrials to the public. the emergence of the new race of 'super-soldiers' in season 8 returns him to the spotlight, as this new race of aliens attempts to remove all record of their existence.
