Second Semester Syllabus

American School of Asuncion

Course Description and Objectives:

We will be reading, writing, and speaking in a multitude of ways throughout the semester.  We will be reading novels together and ones that you may choose.  You will be writing poetry, essays, about your own interests, and also responding to short stories, plays, nonfiction works, and novels.  Writing using editing and revising (called the Writing Process) will be taught and emphasized, and you will be using the computer lab to word process some your writing.

Outline:          

During each month books, stories, and activities will focus upon a theme.  Many of the themes and activities will relate and integrate with other subject areas such as social studies, science, and math.

            Novel sets to be used throughout the second semester: Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell, The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Burton’s Zoom Zoom Varoom Machine by Dorothy Haas.

Required Text and Supplies:

You will be issued the textbook entitled Literature: Copper during the first week of school.   The following materials should also be brought to class on a daily basis.

            -A two or three ring binder with loose leafed lined paper

            -3 dividers

            -Two folders that will attach in binder   

-Pencils, pen, colored pencils

            -A hard cover journal to be kept in the classroom

Grading Policy:

            Tests/Quizzes   40%                             Projects/Writing            25%

            Homework 5%                         Journal                         10%

            Summer Reading Project 10%            Participation                 10%

            *For semester grades, each quarter will count as 40%, and the final exam will count as 20%.  If a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to know what assignment was missed and complete it promptly.  All major projects are due at 8:00 am or before, the day they are due.

Behavioral Expectations:            (Also refer to Parent/Student Handbook and Honor Code)

All students have the right to learn, and each student is expected to follow the three “B’s”: behave, be responsible, and be fair, both to themselves and others.

            Consequences:

                        (1) Verbal warning                         (2) “Chance Slip”

(3) Disciplinary Action Form (Will be issued when three “Chance Slips”  are earned in a two week period)             (4) Parent-teacher conference                       

(5) Report to principal

This year we will journey through the exciting history of ancient civilizations.  We will discuss and share our cultural experiences and develop a greater understanding of world history and its impact on our daily lives, values, and ideas.  We will analyze human history, understand cause and effect of historical events, understand historical patterns, and obtain information from maps and graphs, and develop a life-long interest in history.

 Second Semester Course Outline of Topics:

The Roman Republic and Empire

Three Great Western Religions

Medieval Europe

Empires and Cultures of Africa

Required Text :

Grading Policy:

            Tests/Quizzes               50%            Projects           30%

            Participation                 10%            Homework       10%

            *For semester grades, each quarter will count as 40%, and the final exam will count as 20%.  If a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to know what assignment was missed and complete it promptly.   All projects may be turned in on or before 8:00 am of the due date, with no exceptions.
