"Just three decades ago, Thurgood Marshall was only months away from appointment to the Supreme Court when he suffered an indignity that today seems not just outrageous but almost incomprehensible. He and his wife had found their dream house in a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C., but could not lawfully live together in that state: he was black and she was Asian. Fortunately for the Marshalls, in January 1967 the Supreme Court struck down the anti-interracial-marriage laws in Virginia and 18 other states. And in 1967 these laws were not mere leftover scraps from an extinct era. Two years before, at the crest of the civil-rights revolution, a Gallup poll found that 72 per cent of Southern whites and 42 per cent of Northern whites still wanted to ban interracial marriage."

"Racial intermarriage has long been a source of anxiety in America. After World War II, Senator Theodore G. Bilbo of Mississippi defended white supremacy in a book titled "Take Your Choice: Separation or Mongrelization." Like other racists of his era, Bilbo believed that an inevitable result of dismantling segregation would be the amalgamation of the races through intermarriage. He was right: since the U.S. Supreme Court, in Loving v. Virginia (1967), struck down the last antimiscegenation laws of the states, marriage across racial lines has grown at a remarkable rate."

"Will the races be "diluted," the children confused, the cultures compromised? The couples interviewed for this story had much to consider before taking the plunge. They were often wary, and sometimes frightened, but ultimately they said their life decisions were dictated by the simplest, strongest reality. "As I explained to my family, this is the woman I love, who just happens to be white," said Frederick Paine, 43, of Augusta, Ga. "What we do is for us--not for what other people judge us by." ......................."Said Gregory Logan, half of an interracial couple from Raleigh, N.C.: "You can't ignore color, because society won't let you. But when I wake up in the morning, I see my wife--not her color." And that, many said, is the bottom line. "We know social pressures are out there, but we don't let 'em bother us," said Jack Jordan of New Orleans, a black man who married an Hispanic woman 11 years ago. "We have no choice. We're in love."

THE EFFECTS OF INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE ON MULTIRACIAL CHILDREN

I interviewed SRHS Freshman, Sheena Johnson, for her personal insight and experience on this issue

1.) What races are your parents?

African-American-Father, White/Puerto Rican-Mother

2.)When did your parents meet?

in college, around 19 or 20

3.) Did anyone in either family oppose the marriage?

No, both were fine with it

4.)What were the positive and negative aspects of growing up in a multiracial family?

Some negatives were that my mom got threatening phone calls when she was pregnant with me- Some man called

and would tell her that if she had me he was going to kill her and me, so that kind of scared my parents. Also, the way other people

took my parents being different races. It was OK in elementary school, because everyone is too young to care, but in

middle school when people saw me with my mom and asked me i would lie and say she wasn't my mom. It's ok now because i know

that its OK that my parents are different races.

Some positive aspects are that i have been exposed to alot of different cultures and people and it has shaped me as a person.

5.)Do you think that interracial marriages are hard on the children?

Yes, it makes it hard for the kids, but if you're inlove than there is no reason you shouldn't get married
