Work started on the car in March 2000 when the stripping of the entire car
interior began. This included seats, door cards, carpets and roof cloth
until there was nothing left but bare metal.
Next, the
Dynamat noise deadening was used. 10 rolls of the extra-large
'Premium' grade was stuck to the panels, floor, doors and roof.
When the sound deadening was applied, 3-4 layers of fibreglass matting was applied along with nearly 4 gallons of resin.NOTE: Never try to Fibreglass a roofskin wearing your best clothes and no protection. £100s worth of clothes were destroyed and new haircuts were gained on that day !
Next the fun part started with the building of the speaker enclosure. To fit
all sixteen subwoofers in I had to angle the box at the bottom to build
straight up to the roof, the holes were then cut and the face was braced
into position with glue and screws. Next the sides of the enclosure were
measured and screwed into position, leaving a little extra length to form
the boot install and amp rack. When these were sturdy enough I applied
another 2-3 coats of fibreglass to the sides and face and filled any gaps
with P38 fibreglass body filler
(this was also used on all the joins for
strength).
With the sides now in place I was able to brace to structure with 3" MDF strips going from side to side and roof to floor. Bracing was also added to the face to rear of the enclosure and all joins again plastered with P38 for strength.
At this point the face of the enclosure was covered with black carpet and all 16 Subwoofers were screwed into place. Once the speakers were secure I started the unenviable task of wiring 32 voice coils to show a 2-ohm load (all subs are Dual voice coil). To do this each sub was wired in parallel to itself and then run in series to each corresponding sub. To give the desired 2-ohm load I wired up to separate banks of speakers, 8 in each. With each bank now showing 1-ohm I then wired the two banks in series to now give me the 2-ohm load ...easy huh ?
I now had to join all 64-speaker wires into the four that would be going into the amplifier. For this I just used 4 '8Ga to 4Ga' distribution blocks and used the 4Ga power cable from Phoenix Gold as speaker cable.
The rear of the Enclosure was now fitted into place, P38 applied to the joins and another 3 layers of fibreglass pasted on.
