EXPERIENCE

- Internship, Eady City Community Improvement Association, Inc.    (March 2001-June 2001)

Work directly with individuals with mental and/or physical disabilities in a non-profit organization.  Oversee job seeking/resume workshops by providing seminars and information to consumers. Also assist in computer literacy training, GED preparation and other services E.C.C.I.A. provides. Keep an updated file on each client receiving services and frequently contact consumers to see if further assistance is needed.

- Graduate Assistant, University of Alabama (September 1999-December 2000)

As a graduate assistant, I worked in three different capacities: 1) Supervisor of Work-Study Students,  Office of Student Employment Services. Duties included providing weekly statistics of university students usage of student employment services, contacting area businesses to recruit jobs for university students, entering data into Microsoft Access Database, and interviewing and recommending work-study students to be hired.  2) Home Ownership Counselor, College of Human Environmental Sciences.  Duties included connecting individuals with developmental disabilities with agencies involved with home ownership, providing financial assistance, and keeping updated files.  3) Supervisor of Tutors, America Reads/America Counts Program, Office of Financial Aid.  Duties included working closely with Tuscaloosa County and City Administrators in order to continue the effectiveness of the program, providing training workshops for all new tutors, and creating and implementing training materials for tutors.

- Community Service and Volunteerism Board Member (September 1999-February 2000)

Duties included evaluating the services and performances of service organizations on the campus of the University of Alabama, provide a means for students to become involved in community service projects, and network with Tuscaloosa county service organizations.

- Prevention Specialist, Indian Rivers Mental Health Center (December 1998-July 1999)

Responsibilities included preparing, organizing, and implementing lectures and programs concerning drug prevention for youths in six Alabama counties.  Visited several elementary schools in order to form peer groups who were responsible for providing drug prevention information to their fellow classmates. In a separate program, lectures were also conducted on several topics such as social skills, life skills, anger management, and self-esteem workshops at the Tuscaloosa Juvenile Detention Center, Tuscaloosa Alternative School and Tuscaloosa County Jail.
 

- Research Assistant, University of Alabama (January 1998-August 1998)
Conducted research studies at participating nursing homes in the Tuscaloosa area.  Participants included those with mild dementia.  Intervention therapy for these residents was introduced in order to improve their quality of life. Each session included observing participants, collecting data, and compiling data in order to calculate research results.

- Internship, RISE (August 1996-May 1997)
Supervised children four to six years of age with mental and/or physical disabilities.  Primary duties included teaching social and academic skills.
