Mason Smith was born and raised on a farm. He married early in his life to a sweet woman named Maggie and had two children, a boy named Scott and a girl named Rose. They live on a farm in the Midwest. Mason works to make ends meet, running the family farm, while his wife works as a local schoolteacher.

Recently, a large corporation tried to bully Mason into selling his farm, even going as far as sending special operatives to destroy parts of his farm. Encountering the trespassers, Mason was struck on the head by the butt of a gun, causing his latent mutant powers to surface. Using these new power instinctively, he caused the vines from the pumpkin patch to entangle the thugs and he also had his favorite horse, Monica, back-kick the lead enforcer. Eventually, he drove the corporate criminals from his farm.

A few weeks later, Mason was contacted by Professor Charles Xavier. Dr. Xavier was hoping that Mason and his family would come and stay at his estate, so he could learn to control his powers. At the present, Mason is torn between his family's farming heritage and his wondrous new abilities.
