Limos and beer.
This has bothered me since my DUI. I presented this point at my trial, and I have yet to hear an excuse that satisfactorily answers my questions. Why is it legal for the passengers of limos to drink/have open containers in the vehicle? No other vehicle can legally do this, except airplanes and cruises on luxury boats, but I don't have any of those. You can not legally consume alcoholic beverages in a vehicle as a passenger, but for some reasons people with the money to afford a limo or passenger cruise can. This tends to raise valid questions such as why it is legal in one case, but not the other. Is it because limos & boats have designated drivers.? If so, why then is it not legal for me to drink in the back seat of a car with my own sober driver? The "open container law" should be in effect for passengers of any motor driven vehicle on US soil.
Let me be clear when I say, that there is no reason someone should be driving anything under the influence, as it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see and interpret the statistics of alcohol related accidents. I realize that now. Yet our society still looks away when it comes to a matter of money having privileges. Its ironic, that in emergency, a passenger may be needed to fly an airplane or drive a boat, even if he had been drinking, but as long as he does well, he's a hero. I certainly wouldn't be jumping up to fly the plane in that situation, unless I HAD been drinking, then it might even be fun. It truly sickens me to see a business man in a three piece suit sitting in a limo, having a late afternoon drink while stuck in 5 o'clock traffic. I wonder if it sickens that man to look into the car next to him and to see me taking swigs off my bottle of jack, with my beer chaser...Would it make him any less sick, if I was in the backseat, and a sober driver was at the wheel? I bet it would! In truth, I would like to own my very own bar on wheels, but I'm still stuck with a cooler in the backseat. Although getting struck by a vehicle would suck, getting struck by a limo would suck even worst. Some limos can weigh as much as 3 times the weight of a car!
I propose that the next time you are in the backseat of your friends car and a cop pulls you over and questions why you are drinking, simply tell them...This is my limo!
