Downloading Files on a PC for Use on a Mac
Downloading files on a PC from Hotline (or anyplace) and making them work on a Mac:
You CANNOT download .img files, installer files, .smi files on a PC. The PC strips the resource fork and the file is worthless.
Here are two methods you can use to go from PC to Mac and make the file work.
Method 1:
If you are downloading from a server with a nice admin and he will do it
for you, he can copy the resource fork from the image file you downloaded
and you can get it. Or, anyone you might know that has downloaded the file
intact may be able to help you this way.
To do this they need ResEdit. Download it HERE and then:
1. Drag the .img file to ResEdit icon, it will open.
2. Do a Select All, then a Copy.
3. Go to File->New. Then do a PASTE into that window. Save the file, name it whatever. Then stuff it as a sit file. It will be SMALL, usually less than 100k.
4. By now you should have transferred your downloaded "bad" image from the PC to the Mac. Get the .sit file from whoever made it, unstuff it, and launch it in ResEdit.
5. Open the image file in ResEdit too. A dialog will say something like "Opening this file will create a resource fork, do you want to do that?" Click Yes.
6. Do a select all in the file from him, copy, and paste into that blank window of the bad file. Save and exit ResEdit. Double click the image and it will work now.
Method 2:
This is a better method in my opinion.
1. Download your file 'til it's almost done on the PC. Within a meg or 2 of finished is fine.
2. Transfer that unfinished file to your Mac (CDRW, split onto Zip Disks, whatever works for you), and put it in your Downloads folder.
3. Use a Type/Creator changer, and make the type/creator of the file HTft/HTLC (partial download Hotline type on your Mac). Or just download this PC to Mac Hotline Autotyper and drag n drop the file to it. Then simply resume your download from the same server and in a very short time you'll have the finished working image :-)
