Game Review

In their final regular season home game Hesperia Christian beat Apple Valley Christian 61-40. The Patriots were led by Billy Hague with a double double of 11 points and 10 steals and Mike Maerzluft with a double double of 14 points and 16 rebounds. Zach Howard contributed 14 points in his final home game as a senior.

HCS played somewhat conservatively but got the job done. Defensively they shut down Steven Messner to no points. However, they did allow both Wes Watts and Steve Scranton to get 12 points a piece and Alex Patag got eight points. HCS beat the Warriors every quarter but the third, which was one of the Patriots worst third quarters this season. HCS shot a dismal 3 for 18 from the field. Fortunately AVC could not take advantage and only won the quarter 7-6.

HCS shot 71% from the charity line and 40% from the three point line. The turnover to assist ratio was a positive with 12 assist to 11 turnovers. HCS pulled down 39 rebounds, dominating the boards over AVC with their 17 rebounds. Mike Maerzluft was responsible for 16 of those rebounds and played very well putting shots up inside the paint. HCS had both Patag and Watts in foul trouble but failed to capitalize on that by fouling either one out of the game. In playoffs that could be fatal.

So despite an unremarkable performance, HCS sweeps AVC this season and is one game away from an undefeated Agape League year. They are now 9-0 in Agape and 18-6 overall.

Game Preview
Hesperia Christian hosts its final home game of the 2005-2006 season tonight against its arch rival, Apple Valley Christian. The Warriors are presently 12-8 (5-3). Apple Valley Christian is coming off an upset loss to Bethel Christian in Apple Valley last Friday. Their other two league losses were to Joshua Springs in Yucca Valley 39-34 and HCS 56-25. Their other losses are to Silver Valley three times, Tri City Christian and Upland Christian.

The Warriors are led by senior Wes Watts, an All-Agape League player. He can rebound well and consistently can get about 17 points for his team. He is supported by soph Steven Messner, who is their only three point shooter this season. He averages about 11 PPG but is capable of putting up 25 points in a game as he has done several times this season. Their big man inside is senior Steve Scranton although Watts is their top rebounder. Scranton does the blue collar scoring underneath. The Warriors like HCS are a terrible free throw shooting team, shooting 59% to HCS' 63%. Only Scranton shoots over 70% from the charity line. Joe Ungaro and Michael Harrison are the team's two worst FT shooters. Like Joshua Springs they are very good rebounding on the defensive boards but not so good on their offensive rebounding.

HCS won the overall series last season 2-1. In the 2004 series HCS won 2-1 but was swept 0-3 in the season before. Coach Dobyns has never lost a league game to Apple Valley Christian as a head coach nor as a player.

But in this rivalry, stats never seem to mean anything. HCS is favored by about eight points as in many ways both teams are evenly matched. Like last time, defense, lack of turnovers and free throws will win this one for the Patriots. The Patriots have got to get their turnover rate under control before playoffs.

Sadly tonight we say farewell to four seniors who have played a major role in the Patriots success over the last three years. It is the final regular season home game for Mike Petersen, Billy Hague, Zach Howard and Kyhl Pearson.
