This vintage lamp shown here is the GE Edison Mazda 150 watt Mazda B lamp. It employs a special getter inside the hollow top portion of the glass support to help control lamp darkening. This getter was used in 150 and 250 watt lamps of this time, circa 1912. Lamps utilizing this kind of getter are somewhat scarce, because these lamps were only made for a short time. They were superseded in 1913 by the Mazda C lamp, which employs a single coil C-9 filament and a gas filled atomsphere opposed to vaccuum used in this lamp. This vintage lamp still lights, and is really bright when lit at full brightness!

The fiber is NOT the getter itself, the particles inside the hollow tube is the getter itself, called the Skaupy (sp) getter. The fiber only keeps the getter in place! Did you know that lamps with this getter will show a rainbow color inside the glass after many hours?
