The unique reflector lamp shown here is called an "elliptical reflector" lamp. The design was first introduced in the mid 1970s and the purpose of the reflector is to allow a beam that starts around 2 1/2 inches from the face of the bulb, in other words pushing the beam farther out of the bulb. Because of this design, this lamp is ideal for deeply recessed fixtures, and can be used as an energy saving substitute for conventional R and PAR lamps.
This lamp shown here is an older (1980s) imported version of the ER-30, and are rather not very common due to the inefficent thick frosting. The USA made ones, with longer necks and lightly frosted glass, are much more efficent...and 99% of the time I see an ER-30 or ER-40 lamp, it is of US or Mexican manfacture from the major manfacturers.
