A Promenade Performance Along Morecambe's Seafront

Niki and Kathy unveiled Relative in Morecambe, Lancashire with an impressive site-specific performance along the Morecambe Promenade on the afternoon of Saturday 23 April 2005 featuring the grandparents and grandchildren of Morecambe and Lancaster who have participated in the development of this work. Highlights included a Motability Buggy Ballet, a Ghetto Blaster Symphony and a series of short intimate performances. The live performance was followed that evening by stunning film projections on the facade of the art-deco Midland Hotel. The choreographed film sequence featured the "grand-participants" in the Morecambe Winter Gardens (aka The Victoria Pavilion) and accentuated the unused, silent state of these two historic buildings. Said Niki: "The prom performance went well with several hundred people following it, and many returned in the evening and there was a huge buzz. The film looked amazing."

GRAND-PARTICIPANTS --- Ron and Connie Gardner, and their grandchildren - 10-year-old twins Amy and Stephen - were among the first of the "grand-pairings" to participate in the development of Relative and they were featured in the project's special debut performance. The upper photo shows Ron and Amy dancing a waltz in Morecambe's historic Winter Gardens while, in the lower photo, Connie and Stephen watch from a balcony. This was a true bridging of the generations because Ron and Connie spent a great deal of their social life in the Winter Gardens when they were younger.
