LIVERPOOL is guaranteed an early white Christmas this year. Two giant snow machines will ensure a constant flurry of flakes as the city's Christmas lights are lit this weekend. The festive switch-on will be performed by ex-Boyzone pop idol Stephen Gately, who will star in a new Christmas production of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Empire Theatre. The 26- year-old Dublin singer said: "To be asked to turn on the lights is a real honour. "I've never done this sort of thing before, so I am looking forward to it immensely." Sunday's ceremony, starting at 5pm on St George's Plateau, Lime Street, will see the nearby Wellington Monument transformed into a giant Christmas tree. A two-hour concert, in which Stephen will sing songs from Joseph, will conclude with a firework and laser spectacular. Liverpool's Love And Joy Gospel Choir will perform their newly released CD version of You'll Never Walk Alone. Other highlights will include a choir of 200 Mersey-side children singing a song specially commissioned for the Round The World Clipper Race, which started in Liverpool last month and will end here in September 2003. City council leader Mike Storey said: "This will be a Christmas to remember. "We have been developing our festive celebrations over the years, and this will be the best yet."
