Christmas Puppy
Oleta Larrabee

Oh! what do you buy at Christmastime
For a boy who is about...so tall?
Just what can you think of at Christmastime
That he would like best of all?

We searched through the toy stores.
Yes, we searched through them all
To find just the right thing
For a boy....'bout that tall.

The things we saw in the windows there
Were either too big or too small
And would never do for the gift for him...
The boy just about....so tall.

But the gift that came on Christmas Eve
For the boy that was just that tall,
Though tied with green bow, would fit in his hand,
And..."The bestest present of all."

A little black puppy with four white feet
And the wagglingest tail in the town
Was under and on and around and in
And over and upside down!

The years have passed since that Christmas Eve,
When the little black dog came to stay;
And the greeting he gives to the boy growing tall
Gets wigglier every day!

A little black puppy with four white feet
And the wagglingest tail in the town,
Who chews off the buckles and eats all the fudge,
Might even tear Sis's best gown

Is still the "bestest of presents" to get
For a small boy...who'll grow six feet tall.
Just between you and me, I really do think
That the puppy was meant for us all.
