Judge: 2 Leeds stories

THE judge in the Leeds United trial yesterday told jurors to analyse police interviews of Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer.

Mr Justice Henriques said the men had told cops a different story from the evidence they had given in court.

Defender Woodgate, 21, and midfielder Bowyer, 24, deny attacking 21- year-old student Sarfraz Najeib with two other men last January.

The judge told the jury at Hull Crown Court to "act" if they believed the discrepancies were a "desire to conceal guilt".

He said Woodgate initially refused to tell police who he was with, then said he ran along a street because he saw Bowyer running. In court he denied seeing Bowyer running.

The judge added Bowyer failed to identify Woodgate¡¦s friends to police but did in court.

The judge said: "If there is an innocent explanation for any lies and that innocent explanation may be true and accurate, then you don¡¦t, of course, act upon it.

"If you conclude that the only explanation for the lie is a desire to conceal guilt then you can."

The trial continues.
