From Leeds Leeds Leeds February 2002

Player of the month

Jonathan Woodgate

Given all that's happened to and around him over the last couple of years, you'd be forgiven for expecting him to be a bit ring-rusty when he returned to the side against Bolton just after Christmas. Not so. Despite David O'Leary's injury worries, Woody was back in the side - alongside Rio - on merit. Watching him back in training even the Boss was surprised how quickly he regained his form. And from the moment he rejoined the starting line-up, our alarming defensive slide was halted and we went three consecutive games without conceding a goal. Coincidence? Absolutely not. He was outstanding, too, at Cardiff and against Arsenal. As O'Leary says: "He has a long road back but we know the ability he has as a footballer." Talk of him and Rio for England is wholly justified.
