Woodgate makes his
Toon debut
Newcastle's £9million
new boy Jonathan Woodgate made his long-awaited
debut in a black and white shirt on Monday as he prepared for his
first Premiership appearance for his new club.
The 23-year-old England international eased his way through a 2-1
victory over third division leaders Hartlepool United in a specially
arranged friendly at the club's Darsley Park training headquarters.
Woodgate will be considered for Saturday's vital league clash with
Chelsea at St James' Park - one month since his incendiary £9million
move from cash-strapped Leeds United.
Woodgate arrived on Tyneside with a thigh injury, and although he was
fit to play at Elland Road at the weekend, he missed the 3-0 victory
because of a clause negotiated in the deal.
Robson will have been equally delighted that Portuguese midfielder
Hugo Viana also came through the 90 minutes unscathed following
surgery to pin his dislocated shoulder.
Unlike Woodgate, the 20-year-old is eligible to play in Wednesday
night's Champions League fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, and could
be involved due to Jermaine Jenas facing an injury lay-off.
Carl Cort gave Newcastle a first-half lead and Chilean Clarence Acuna
made it 2-0 before Kevin Henderson pulled one back for Mike Newell's
men.
