Fast-track for
Woody
NEWCASTLE United are
trying to fix up a game tomorrow to speed up
Jonathan Woodgate's debut.
The £9 million defender is pencilled in to make his delayed Newcastle
start against Champions League chasing rivals Chelsea at St James'
Park next weekend.
But boss Sir Bobby Robson is worried about his lack of match fitness
after suffering a thigh injury in his final weeks at Leeds.
Robson revealed last night: "It's seven weeks since Jonathan played,
so we are trying to get a game for him on Monday to help him.
"I want to play him against Chelsea and give our centre halves a
rest. But the way we are playing at the moment he might struggle to
get into the side!"
Robson can't field Woodgate against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions
League in mid-week because he played for Leeds in the UEFA Cup.
Woodgate was fit to face Leeds at Elland Road yesterday but had not
been allowed to because of a clause in the transfer deal.
