Woody finally
trains with the Toon
Jonathan Woodgate has
finally taken part in his first Newcastle
United training session after making his move from Leeds on the final
day of the transfer window.
The £9 million central defender was carrying a thigh injury when he
signed for Bobby Robson's team and has not played a game since
Leeds' clash with Manchester City on January 11.
While Robson is pleased to have the England defender back in action
he has told him that he does not need to push himself as he will not
feature in the first team squad until Newcastle face Chelsea on March
1.
"Jonathan has trained for the first time with us and he did very
well.," said the Newcastle boss.
"But because he does not play for us until we entertain Chelsea on
March 1, I have told him there is no need to take any chances and not
to rush back.
"He cannot play against Leeds a week on Saturday and this is the
reason I will not take him to Germany with the rest of the squad on
Sunday for next week's Champions League game with Bayer Leverkusen.
"If he had been able to play at Leeds I would have taken him to
Germany, but I feel there is more benefit to him to stay at home and
train."
