Woody: Hard to say
Goodbye
Jonathan Woodgate
officially became a Newcastle United player on
Friday afternoon, completing his £9m move from Elland Road to St
James' Park.
The 23-year-old, who is another successful graduate of the Academy at
Leeds' Thorp Arch training centre, passed his medical without any
problems and agreed personal terms on Thursday evening.
Woodgate made 100 league starts for United, scoring four league goals
in the process, and with total appearances (cup, European and
substitutes) played 142 times for Leeds.
Woodgate admitted it was a tough decision to leave Elland Road.
"I've been at Leeds since I was 13 years old, I loved it at Leeds and
have lots of friends there but I took the opportunity to move on,"
said Woodgate.
"I wouldn't say I was pushed out, they accepted the bid and said I
can speak to Newcastle and I went.
The fans were brilliant for me, everyone was, right down to the
laundry staff, they've all supported me throughout. It was very hard
to say goodbye to the players, I've got a lot of friends there."
