Woody could be
bargain of decade
Newcastle United have
picked up the bargain of the decade in signing
Jonathan Woodgate from Leeds United for £9 million.
That was the verdict today from Leeds legend, Gateshead-born Norman
Hunter.
The former England international, who has followed Woodgate's career
at Elland Road right from the off through his media work, told me: "I
didn't want to see Jonathan leave Leeds.
"But if he was going to leave, then as a Geordie, I can think of no
better place for him to go than Newcastle United.
"They are on the up and up, with a great chance of playing Champions
League football again next season, and with the experience he's got
I'm sure Sir Bobby Robson will make Woodgate a better player.
"I must confess I love Woodgate as a player. He is quick with
everything a good central defender needs to have.
"I suppose the only things missing are that he is not a shouter and
that he could take more charge of things at the back. But don't
forget he is still only young and these will all come.
"He is a smashing lad but above all else he is an excellent
footballer. I must say that at £9 million Woodgate is a steal and
could turn out to be the bargain of the decade.
"Don't forget Rio Ferdinand cost £30 million when he moved from Leeds
to Manchester United and if Jonathan is not as good as him then he is
not far behind.
"In fact, I would say there is probably nothing to choose between
them."
