Woody set to stay?

Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson fears his £10m move for Jonathan
Woodgate is doomed to failure as Leeds prepare to hang on to the
defender.

The Magpies are still waiting to hear whether their approach for the
England international defender has been accepted by cash-strapped
Leeds although their hopes took a dent on Tuesday with the news that
Robbie Fowler's £7m move to Manchester City looks back on.

Whites boss Terry Venables has admitted that Leeds are unlikely to be
forced into cashing in on one of their prized assets if Fowler's
Maine Road switch is completed.

Magpies boss Robson, however, has backed his current defenders to
keep the club challenging for a Champions League place, whether
Woodgate arrives before Friday's transfer deadline or not.

"I won't be disappointed if nothing happens in the next few days," he
said. "We'll just soldier on again and look at the market again in
the summer.

"With Titus Bramble fit and Andy O'Brien back we've got the defenders
to see us through until then," he added. "Nikos Dabizas and Steve
Caldwell have both taken their chances in the last

few weeks and worked very hard to stay in the team.

"We won't panic because we know what we have here and it won't be the
end of the world if we fail to make a signing this week."
