Venables reveals frustration

UNITED boss Terry Venables has admitted to growing increasingly
frustrated at the speculation considering Jonathan Woodgate, and
admitted he didn't know if he was able to prevent the defender from
leaving the club.
Newcastle have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old, but have
yet to make an offer to the Leeds board. Venables desperately does
not want that to happen, just as he doesn't want to lose a defender
who is recognised as part of the future of the England team.

The club's financial postion though means the board may listen to and
consider offers that they would not have entertained had United been
backed by the rewards of being in the Champions League.

Woodgate, along with Alan Smith and Paul Robinson, is one of the
players whom the former England coach stressed must be kept at all
costs.

He revealed his frustrations at a press conference on Friday
afternoon before the team flew down for tomorrow's FA Cup clash with
Gillingham

"Every time something comes up you have to deal with it the best you
can, then weight up your own feelings," said Terry.

"You can get so frustrated that you say 'well do you go on as things
are or do you do something about it'?

"There's no timescale. You just decide when you feel the time is
right to have a team-talk with yourself.

"In fairness, of course I understand the fans planning to stage a
protest but, if you say do the club or the board sympathise, I think
the answer would be that they do sympathise, but can they do anything
about it? I don't know, that's a different answer.

"I don't know if I could persuade Woodgate to stay but I would do my
damnedest."

"I want to keep him at Elland Road - I want to keep all the good
players. I think he loves the club and of course he would want to
stay here. He does want to stay here.

"But in this game you never know. If someone is tempted enough...but
I don't think he particularly wants to be tempted and I don't want it
either."
