Woody signs Leeds
extension
Leeds United have confirmed
Jonathan Woodgate has signed a three-year extension to his existing contract at
Elland Road.
United offered the defender a new lucrative five-year contract back in March,
but have now agreed a new deal with the star keeping him from potentially
quitting the club in a year's time.
Leeds were keen to avoid another situation, as with Lee Bowyer, where the player
enters the remaining year of his deal forcing the club to accept less rather
than lose the player for free.
Woodgate joined the club as a trainee and went from strength to strength with
the club, after originally being handed his debut by caretaker manager David
O'Leary against Nottingham Forest.
Recent off-field events, specifically his court case with Bowyer, have put
Woodgate's career under a massive cloud, leading some sources to claim the
player would be off-loaded by the club.
However, United's commitment to the star by agreeing a new contract with the
Middlesbrough-born man demonstrates the defender is firmly in the club's long
term plans.
Manager Terry Venables has already offered his support for the star saying:
"He's (Woodgate) not a problem at all. He's got a bigfuture at the
club".
