Woody gets a head
start
Whilst Leeds' multi talented
squad enjoy the last week of their summer holidays, two players have already
been preparing for the new season by returning to training a week early.
Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Bridges have sought to get a head start on their
Elland Road team-mates by building up their fitness at United's Thorp Arch
training ground, at a time when only the Academy
players are in.
Defender Woodgate missed the final month of last season after suffering a broken
jaw in an off-field incident, and striker Bridges has spent nearly 18 months on
the sidelines whilst recovering from serious ankle and knee injuries.
Bridges made his comeback in Gary Kelly's testimonial in May, and is anxious
about the fact that he now needs to build his fitness back up and get games
under his belt before he can begin to challenge for a first team place again.
He's banking on a good pre-season.
"There's no problems now with the injury. I've been training for the last
three weeks and so we knew the knee was good, he said back in May.
"I've had 18 months' patience. I feel like bursting, but I've got another
two or three months in the summer now and then it's all go again."
United fans will be hoping he can show the form that so impressed after his move
form Sunderland, and also expect big things from Jonathan Woodgate, whose
partnership with Rio Ferdinand in the heart of the Leeds defence could be the
key to success next season.
