court snub
THE Sunday Mirror
refused to reveal why it ran an article that wrecked the first £1million
trial of two Leeds United soccer stars, a court heard yesterday.
Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate were accused of attacking an Asian student.
There was no mention of racism at the trial.
But the victim's father claimed the attack was racist in an interview with the
paper, which ran it as the jury considered its verdict ¡X forcing the hearing
to be scrapped.
Journalists had told the victim's family the interview would NOT be used till
the trial ended.
QC Andrew Caldecott, for the Attorney General, told the High Court:
"Publication was an appalling breach of trust."
He said the article was an "extremely serious" contempt.
But the QC revealed no one at the paper has signed an affidavit to explain how
it had happened.
QC Jonathan Caplan, for the Sunday Mirror, apologised for wrecking the case and
blamed a lawyers' misunderstanding. The case continues.
Woodgate, 22, and Bowyer, 24, were cleared of GBH at a second trial in December.
Woodgate was found guilty of affray.
