Leeds star banned for speeding

Leeds United soccer star Jonathan Woodgate has been convicted of speeding. The player was banned from driving by magistrates in Richmond, North Yorkshire, but the disqualification was immediately suspended pending an appeal.

The conviction comes just months after the England defender was found guilty by Hull Crown Court of affray during a street attack on Asian student Sarfraz Najeib.

Woodgate, who recently completed 100 hours' community service for the offence, was also omitted from the England squad for this summer's World Cup finals in Asia.

He was recorded doing an average speed of 97mph in his Cherokee Jeep on the A19 near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, in July last year.

Magistrates banned the player from driving for six months and fined him £500 with £250 costs. Woodgate, 22, from Middlesbrough, did not attend Richmond Magistrates Court.
