FA want Adams to counsel Woody

REFORMED alcoholic Tony Adams will be asked to counsel wayward duo Jonathan Woodgate and John Terry in a bid to save their England careers.

But Lee Bowyer's call-up for next month's friendly against Holland is to be blocked following his involvement in the student assault case.

FA chiefs are desperate to repair the English game's image which has taken a battering after a wave of incidents involving young players, and drink and violence among fans at Cardiff, Chelsea and Millwall.

They want veteran Arsenal skipper and former England star Adams to speak to Leeds' Woodgate and Chelsea's Terry about his drink hell which he wrote about in detail in his book Addicted two years ago.

FA chief executive Adam Crozier will discuss the players' situation with international boss Sven Goran Eriksson this week.

It is unlikely Woodgate will be chosen until he has completed his community service sentence imposed for his part in the student assault case.

Terry is certain to be left out following a charge of assault and affray against him for his part in a nightclub incident.

Bowyer was cleared in the student assault case but the judge branded him a thug and a liar.

The wave of bad publicity which hit the player has convinced FA bosses it would be a bad move to put him in the team for the Holland game.
