UNITED Boss Terry
Venables singled out Jonathan Woodgate for special
praise after Leeds got their first victory over Manchester United for
five years thanks to Harry Kewell's header.
"I thought Woodgate was magnificent," said Venables. "In the first
half he held us together."
Leeds fought hard for the win, and it took some resolute defending to
keep Man Utd at bay, particularly from Woodgate, who cleared one of
the line and made some timely interventions.
Venables admitted he felt Leeds would not be able to withstand the
pressure unless their luck changed.
"I thought at half-time that we'd be looking for our first win
against them in 11 in the next match because they played well and had
us on the rack.
"But we turned it around in the second half. The boys were absolutely
outstanding. I thought in the end we had them on the run and we
deserved it.
"They were much better than us in the first half and we were the
better side in the second half.
"After we took the lead we played the ball better and we played it
earlier. In the first half we wanted too many touches of the ball and
that allowed them to get at us."
Leeds moved up to 12 points from six games with the win, and that
pleased the boss who admitted the points haul matched expectations at
this stage of the season.
