Woody: Batty deserves it
by Administrator

DAVID Batty deserved every bit of applause on Saturday, says Jonathon Woodgate, as United took another giant leap towards a full strength squad.

England midfielder Batty capped a great week for him by making his first appearance for over a year as a sub in Leeds' win over Sunderland, following 90 minutes for the reserves in midweek.

Having battled through a potentially career-ending Achilles' injury, it was a massive boost to United fans to see him return, and the significance of the 32-year-old's presence back in the side was not lost on Woody.

"It felt like we'd scored a goal when Batts' came on because the crowd was that loud," said Woodgate. "He deserves his reception, he's worked really hard to get back.

"It's good to see him and Harry come back into the side.  I thought H' played well and Batts' too when he came on, so it's a big boost for Leeds."

Batty won't be the only returning hero this month either, with Nigel Martyn expected to be in a position to challenge Paul Robinson for his place back.

"It's for the manager to decide who to put in, but Robbo will be in the England squad soon and of course Nigel's already in it.  We're lucky to have two fantastic keepers," added Woodgate.

Woodgate starred in one of Leeds best performances this season as they sent Peter Reid's Black Cats home empty handed, and put three vital points towards our own hopes of reaching the Champions League again.

"Sunderland were on a high because they were in fourth position and we were struggling in the league and we needed those points.  They were important because we've been losing in the league and winning in the Champions League, but the only way we can be sure of being in the Champions League next year is by doing well in the league.

"The crowd here are brilliant and it makes a big difference, because I don't think many teams enjoy coming to Elland Road."
