Novelist Elizabeth Spencer to Receive Corrington Award for Literary Excellence From Centenary College

Shreveport, LA -- The novelist and short story writer Elizabeth Spencer will receive the seventh annual John William Corrington Award for Literary Excellence and read from her work at Centenary College on Tuesday, April 8, 1998. ... The author of nine novels, three collections of short stories and a forthcoming memoir, Spencer is best known for her 1960 novella, The Light in the Piazza. Set in Florence, Italy, this short story tells of a wealthy American tourist's connivance at the courtship of her 26-year old daughter by a local boy.

Spencer explored the mother's decision not to reveal that her beautiful daughter, injured in childhood, is mentally retarded. The work was made into a film in 1962 starring Olivia de Havilland, Rossano Brazzi, Yvette Mimieux and George Hamilton ...
