Alexander
"Xander" LaVelle Harris has lived in Sunnydale, CA, all his life.
His best friend growing up was Willow Rosenberg, and they remain best friends to
this day. He was also best friends with Jesse (although we don't know for
how long), until Jesse was turned into a vampire and Xander inadvertently staked
him during a vampire raid at the Bronze in "The Harvest." Xander
learned of Buffy's secret by overhearing her and Giles speaking in the library
about it in "Welcome to the Hellmouth," and, along with Willow, he
insisted on helping Buffy in her subsequent adventures.
Although not unintelligent by any means, despite
referring to himself as the "king of cretins," Xander has never
excelled academically, relying on Willow to tutor him in many subjects,
especially math.
Xander's love life has not been the most successful
either. Remaining cheerfully oblivious to how Wilow feels about him, he
istead pursued a variety of women who were no good for him, ranging from a sexy
substitute teacher who turned out to be a praying mantis out for his head, to an
exchange student who turned out to be a mummy that needed to drain the life out
of people, to Buffy, for whom he has carried a torch from the moment he saw her
and crashed his skateboard, but who has not shown any interest. He finally
began, incredibly, a relationship with Cordelia Chase (even though he often
declared himself the treasurer of the We Hate Cordelia Chase Fan Club), which
ended when he and Willow discovered they had feelings for each other.
However, things didn't pan out with Willow because they decided they were better
as just friends. Xander has his most bizarre night in "The Zeppo,"
which culminates with him losing his virginity to Faith, of all people.
Anya, the former vengence demon, Anyanka, who has lost her powers and is now
human, asked Xander to the Sunnydale High School Prom, and they began dating
exclusively in "The Harsh Light of Day." Xander realizes that he
loves her in "Hush," when he mistakenly beats up Spike because he
thinks he is attacking her. Xander even proposed to Anya right before the
gang went off to battle Glory in the season 5 finale, "The Gift."
Xander's primary contribution to the Scooby Gang is not
really physical -- Buffy, Giles and Angel are all better suited to the
hand-to-hand stuff -- nor intellectual -- Willow and Giles are more inclined in
that direction -- though he has done both. His most important qualities
are his loyalty to Buffy and the others and his willingness to do whatever is
necessary to help out. But Xander consistently underestimates how useful
he is to the Slayer. However, he is the heart of the group, the deep
emotion.
