Chapter 8
Chapter 8

My whole day started out bad. In the morning I woke up late and didn't even take a shower. I just threw on some clothes that were on the floor. For breakfast I prepared some coffee but accidentaly spilled while I was reaching for a muffin. So then I had to race back upstairs to change. Then I couldn't find my car keys. I finally found them between the cushions on the couch. I ran out of the house and locked the door, when I remembered that I had left the stove on. So I ran back in and turned it off. I ran back out and locked the door. As soon as I was outside I noticed that my car wasn't in its usual parking space. I remembered I had parked it all the way in the back before I had left to the cabin with Nick. I started running when I stepped on some gum. I stopped and picked it off. Then I walked to my car and drove to work.
On the way to work there was tons of traffic and I was already running an hour late. My hair was a mess and I had puffy eyes from not getting enough sleep. All the honking from the cars had left me with a headache. When I finally got to my job the boss was waiting for me.
He took me to his office where he began yelling at me. First he yelled at me because I was responsible. Then because I had forgotten some paperwork at home. He then told me that innocent animals could have died for my not being early. I then had to apologize to him and get to work. My co-workers were also in a bad mood. They stared at me long and hard. Some whispered behind my back.
A woman then came in running through the front door with a dog in her arms. She was a chubby woman with her that looked far worse than mine in the morning. She came at me,"Please, I need a vet, Fifi was hit by car!"
I wanted to laugh at such a name for a dog. She must have gotten it from some movie. The dog was a small chihuahua. It was bleeding from it's leg and a bit from it's back.
"I'm a vet, ma'am I'll help you. Just follow me."
She followed me into a room that had a white table in the middle of it. I instructed her to put the dog down on the table and to sit down. Mean while I put on some gloves. I gently grabbed the dog's leg to check it out.
The dog cried out in pain. The woman glared at me and yelled, "You're hurting him!!!"
"Ma'am please I'm only trying to help him."
She glared at me even harder. I ignored her stare and continued checking the dog. He wasn't hurt that bad. His leg was broken and had a cut on it. The blood from the leg was on his back, so I wasn't really worried about his back.
I grabbed some of the ointments that I would use to clean up a wound. They stung at first but then they would ease off. I picked up a cotton ball and poured a drop on. Then I dabbed at the blood. The dog didn't seem to notice until I started getting closer to the cut. Then he started howling and crying in pain.
The woman came at me and pushed me away from her dog. I stumbled and grabbed hold of the wall so I wouldn't fall.
"Are you trying to kill him or something!!!!" She yelled.
I stood up angrily and answered her,"I'm helping her, you're dog is just a sissy! But if you want to help him be my guest!"
The woman just stared at me in disbelief. She grabbed her dog and stormed out of the room. I followed behind her apologizing. Then my boss stepped out of his office. He pointed for me to go in it.
My heart raced. This is it, I thought, he's going to fire me. I stepped inside and sat down. He sat at his chair accross from me and asked for an explanation. I calmed down and told him the whole story about how the woman had attacked me. I don't think he believed me because he got up outraged. He started yelling at me for losing a customer. I wanted to tell him how I felt about him, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to lose such a job. Instead I listened to him yell at me. To my surprise he told me he wasn't going to fire me because I was one of his best. So, he told me to take the rest of the day off until further notice.
Everyone outside of the office seemed to be talking about it already. They pointed and whispered. I wanted to slap and knock some sense into them. I walked out and went to my car. I drove home fast and locked myself in the house. Inside I sat down on the floor and began crying. This was the worst day in my whole life and it couldn't get any worse.
I wondered why the phone hadn't rung at all in the time I was there. Then I remember that I had disconnected it. I got up from my spot on the floor and connected it. I hadn't disconnected the answering machine and I had 4 messages.
One of them was from Nick saying that if I needed anything to just call him. He said I love you and then hung up. The rest of the messages were from Belle and Alexis saying how mad they were at me for forgetting: Girl's Night Out. At the end of the message Alexis said she would come over.
I decided to take an aspirin for my headache. After taking it I felt really tired so I headed upstairs to take a nap. I fell asleep right away once the aspirin took effect.
It was around 7 when I was awakened by somebody calling my name. I thought it was a dream, but then I felt a hand shake me. I opened my eyes and found Alexis standing next to the bed.
"I should have never given you a house key..." I said half asleep.
"Where have you been these past days!" She demanded. Before I could answer she continued. "Belle and I have been terribly worried about you and you look like you've been out partying! Is your answering machine broken? We've called about 200 times and not once have you answered!!!"
My head had started to ache again. I slowly got up and looked at her. She looked tired her eyes were puffy as she had been crying and had gotten no sleep. Her hair looked tangled and she also looked like she was about to tear me apart.
"What's wrong with you?! she asked with tears forming in her eyes. It made me feel bad to see her like this. I wanted to hug her and tell her that I was alright. I reached out my hand to touch her but she rejected me by getting up.
She stood infront of me, her arms crossed. "We've been friends since we were little... does that even matter to you?!!! The room was silent. Her words hurt me. I wanted to say that I did care, but I knew that interrupting her would only make it worse.
"We're like family... the three of us, but lately you've forgotten about us!
I wanted to tell her about Nick, but I didn't know if it was the right thing to do. So, I just sat there silently looking at her.
"Are you deaf! Can you not hear what I am telling you, or do you not care?!"
I still didn't know if I should answer her. She looked at me exasperated. More tears welled up in her eyes. She gave annoyed sigh and then ran downstairs. I ran after her.
"Alexis! Please... wait!" I called but she only ignored me.
She flung the door open and walked outside. The night was cold and windy. There was something in the air that made everything seem scary. I wanted to get Alexis back in the apartment so I could tell her everything. It didn't matter anymore. Her friendship was really valuable to me and I didn't want to lose it over such a simple thing.
She had reached the parking lot already. She started crossing to where her car was parked. "Alexis, wait, ok, I know I haven't been the best friend in this world but I can fix this."
She stood in the middle of the road laughing. It was a cruel laugh not the one I usually heard from her. It rang in my ears.
"No", she said. "It can't be fixed you've caused too much damage to me. I hope your happy, and I hope you live a happy life too. Good-bye forever!"
She turned around and began to walk away. From around the corner a cars wheels screeched as it raced throught the parking lots. Alexis unsuspected continued walking. The car came straight at her now.
"Alexis!!!!!!!" I cried, but it was too late. The car hit her from the side. Her bones crunched as the car hit her. The impact threw her to the side where she landed with a sickening thud. I ran towards her body. My legs were heavy for some reason, but all that mattered was getting to her. I reached her body and took her head in my arms as I kneeled beside her. Her face was covered in blood and her hair was sticky from it. I felt my self crying. Her eyes were halfway open and she just looked at me.
The man that had hit her was now out of his car. "Is she ok?" he asked his breath stinking of beer.
"Call an ambulence!" I said through tears.
He took a cell phone out of his pocked and dialed. People from the apartments had begun to gather up. They pointed at Alexis' body and talked to the rest.
"My leg..." Alexis said in a whisper.
"It's ok, you'll be alright soon" I said.
"I looked down at her leg and found that it was covered in blood and that it was twisted. I began cleaning the blood from her face and started singing a song that we would both sing together when we were younger. After a few minutes the sirens from the ambulence rang in the cold night. Police started setting up streamers so people wouldn't get through.
Two men from the ambulence came towards me. The gently took Alexis' body from my arms. I watched as they put her in a strecher. A police man came and kneeled beside me.
"I need to you ask you a few questions, Miss," he said gently
I nodded not looking at him but at the ambulence as it drove away. I saw the man from the car bein questioned too.
"Ok, can you tell me in full detail what happened here?" he asked taking out a notepad and a pen.
I looked at him and began telling him about how Alexis had come to my apartment, and that we had had a fight. I told him what the fight was over and he just nodded and took notes. Then I told him how she had stormed out of the house and out into the street. I told him about the car hitting her from the side and her body flying to the side.
He finished a few notes and put his pen away. "Ok, well you did nothing wrong, so you'll be ok. We're going to hold him for the night," He said looking over at the driver. "Do you want to press charges?" the police officer asked.
     "I don't know yet..."
"Call this number if you do." He said handing me a business card. "You take care."
"Wait!" I called after him. "What hospital did they take her to?"
"You don't look like you could make it in your condition," he said looking at me."I'll give you a ride, C'mon."
I followed him to his car. I stepped inside while he stepped into the other side. He turned on the car and we drove out of there. The hospital was in the city, not far from where I lived, but I knew the police officer was right. In my condition I never would have made it. He parked the car and I stepped out. I thanked him and told him I would give him a call if I wanted to press charges.
I stepped inside the hospital. It was bright with all the lights. It had a sick smell of medicine and sick people. I walked over to the front desk and asked them about Alexis. The woman there told me she was in intesive care and that I must wait. So I spent that night in the hospital waiting room.
