Joe wrote down what he wanted to say, and here it is... all for you Joe
"Four-teen years ago amidst the tragedy of a lost bass player to a tragic bus wreck. The remaining members of Metallica thought that they were finished, but they knew that they had to go on for the fans, and for Burton, in order for them to do that they had to find someone to replace him, so one lucky fan got the chance to play with his favorite band, this fan was Jason Newsted. Upon the arrival of Jason, Metallica found a new revitalizing youth among the group, this started the second wave of metallica. Through the 6 albums that were made with Newsted on the bass, they had their biggest hits, and their biggest albums to date.
On stage Newsted was a wild and tireless beast, he could bring everyone to there feet and screaming for more. With a new life among the band, they went on to make their first video, One, they went on to sell 22 million copies of the black album, in the first month it was on the shelves, they went on the biggest tour ever by the band, a 5 year tour, and they changed their sound from a dark and evil one to a more of the time kind of band, they showed their worthiness to be among the greatest bands of all time. Their 6 albums of the time period was of the greatest of the bands career to date. The fan base exploded to that of some of the greatest in history. At one point probably in contention with the number of fans that followed Ozzy Osborne.
But this couldn’t last forever, January 17, 2001, Jason Newsted made a press release to announce his leaving the band. This is what he had to say: "Due to private and personal reasons, and the physical damage that I have done to myself over the years while playing the music that I love, I must step away from the band. This is the most difficult decision of my life, made in the best interest of my family, myself, and the continued growth of Metallica. I extend my love, thanks, and best wishes to my brothers: James, Lars, and Kirk and the rest of the Metallica family, friends, and fans whom have made these years so unforgettable."
