Chapter Nine
Nick pulled Kaity’s car into her driveway. Shutting off the ignition he sat back in his
seat and looked at Kaity. She looked back at him, neither one of them making any moves to
get out of the car.
“First date.” Kaity said quietly.
“For all of us.”
“Yup, I wonder what Brian and Em are doing?”
“If Bri had anything to do with it, prolly sucking face.”
“Nick!” Kaity exclaimed.
“What?” Nick asked innocently. “You know they are.” he said.
“Yeah but still, sucking face sounds so juvenile.”
“Yeah well, I’m a kid at heart.” Nick said grinning.
“Oh shut up.” Kaity said smiling at him. “You wanna come up for awhile??”
“Sure.” Nick said getting out of the car. “Hey!” he said loudly as Kaity reached for the
door handle. She jumped in surprise but smiled when she saw Nick reaching for her door. He
opened it for her and took her hand as she got out.
“Such a gentleman.” She commented.
“Hey, I try.” he said leading her up to the front door which she unlocked and dragged
him into the house. The entire downstairs was dark except for a little light emanating from
the kitchen. Her parents must have left that on for Kaity. Kaity brought her finger up to her
lips motioning for Nick to be quiet. He nodded but as she began to walk towards the stairs he
pulled her back.
“What?” She whispered loudly, noticing the volume of the words she spoke she
cringed.
“This.” Nick whispered at a lower tone as he kissed her. She immediately kissed back
looping her arms around his neck. She pulled away moments later and kicked off her shoes,
Nick did the same and the two of them detoured into the dark living room. They sat down on
the couch and Nick glanced over at her. Even though he could only see the outline of her
body, he could tell she was looking at him.
“I like this.”
“What?”
“I can’t see you, I can only feel you.” Nick said as he softly kissed her forehead.
“It is kind of romantic isn’t it??” Kaity whispered.
“Yes. So, my lady, what would you like to do?”
“Hmmm..I don’t know.” Kaity replied snuggling into Nick’s arms.
“Well, we could always just sit here.”
“Yeah...” Kaity said shivering slightly.
“Cold?”
“Yes, although it is impossible to be cold in Florida, I am.” Kaity said buring herself in
Nick’s chest.
“Why don’t you go turn the heat up??”
“Novel idea.” Kaity muttered as she stood and made her way across the dark living
room. Instead of adjusting the heat, she began a fire in the fireplace. Nick, while Kaity was
gone, moved so he was laying lengthwise on the couch. He made sure that there was room for
Kaity to lay next to him when she returned. Moving back towards the couch Kaity noticed
Nick sprawled.
“And where do I sit?”
“Here.” Nick said opening his arms to her. She shook her head and layed down, her
back facing him. Although it was a tight fit, the two curled up together and managed to
balance on the couch. Nick draped his arm around her waist and held her to him to make
sure she didn’t tumble off. Kaity in turn clutched onto Nick’s t-shirt sleeve and rested her
head back on his chest.
“Comfy.” Kaity whispered as she yawned.
“Now you’re tired?”
“No...just warm and comfortable. Makes for good sleeping conditions.” Kaity said
giggling.
“Sure. So, lets have one of those in depth conversations.” Nick said gazing into the
fire.
“You acutally want to start on of those?”
“Sure, why not. Let’s chat.” Kaity muffeled a laugh in Nick’s shirt.
“Chat? Nick that sounds like something my mother does.”
“Alright, whatever, lets just talk. I like talking with you.”
“What would you like to talk about?” Kaity asked.
“Us.”
“Ah, your favorite topic..”
“No, actually you’re my favorite topic..but that’s okay.” Kaity smiled at his
statement.
“You start.”
“I don’t know where to start.”
“Well, this was your brainiac idea.”
“I know.” Nick said chuckeling. “I love your smell.” Nick said inhaling
deeply.
“What?” Kaity said laughing.
“I do. Don’t laugh at me.”
“I don’t mean to, that just came out of the blue.”
“You smell so good. What do you wear?” Nick said buring his face in her neck, softly
kissing her skin.
“I don’t wear perfume.”
“That’s natural? Wow.” Nick said moving his mouth to her collar bone.
“Mmmmhmm.” Kaity answered closing her eyes.
“That feel good?”
“Yeah.” Kaity breathed.
“Wow, doesn’t take much to make you feel good.” Nick said smiling.
“Hey..”
“Not necessarily a bad thing.”
“Sure.”
“How come you fit perfectly in my arms?” Nick questioned as he wrapped his arms
tighter around her.
“That can only mean one thing you know?”
“What?” Nick asked interested.
“That I was made for you.” Kaity said moving so she could look behind her into Nick’s
eyes.
“I like the though of that. God made you with me in mind.”
“Yeah, sounds...”
“Perfect.” Nick said bringing his hand up to brush a few stray strands of her brown
hair out of her eyes. “Just like you.”
“Oh please, stop sweet talking.”
“That my dear was a compliemnt, not sweet talking.”
“Oh, but Nick, it sounded like sweet talking to me.” Kaity said innocently, but
giggled.
“I was not. Just me, telling my girlfriend what I think of her.”
“I love that!” Kaity said laughing.
“What??”
“Girlfriend. It’s so ...”
“Perfect?”
“What? Is that your word for tonight??”
“That is my word for anything associated with you.” Nick whispered.
“Oh come on!”
“What?” Nick asked.
“Nothing.”
“Kaity, in my eyes, you are perfect.”
“Thank you, Nick.” Kaity said curling up with him again. Kaity had to control herself
from telling him what she felt. Love. The words were on the tip of her tongue, ready to flow
out of her mouth, but she contained them. Seconds of silence passed. It was as though life was
waiting for her to speak. Not being able to hold them in any more she opened her mouth to
speak.
“I..”
“You?..” Nick asked after she stopped abruptly.
“I..um..” She began again. “Do it!” she stated to herself.
“Yes?” Nick asked again.
Taking a deep breath, Kaity closed her eyes and whispered, “I love you.”
“You what?”
