Chapter Seven
The movie ended around seven and the two headed upstairs to Nick’s room.
Nick flopped down on his bed and grabbed the phone to call Brian.
“What do I tell him?”
“Um..tell him that you met these girls at the mall and that you want to know if he
wants to go on a double date.” Kaity explained.
“What if he says no?”
“Tell him that he needs a date, and that if he goes he can practice for when he
asks Emily out.”
“Good one.” Nick said laughing as he dialed his friend’s phone number. “Hey Bri,
wassap??” he asked when Brian answered the phone.
“Nothing man, what happened with you and Kaity?” he asked. Nick was
stumped. What should he say??
“Uh...oh, Kaity didn’t feel the same, she went home a while ago and I went to the
mall for a while.” Nick lied. Kaity just glared at him. He shrugged his shoulders and
looked at her wide eyed.
“Sorry man.” Brian said. “See that’s what I don’t want to happen, I don’t want to
know if Em likes me or not, its better just imagining that she does instead of finding out
that she doesn’t.” Brian explained.
“Yeah I understand Bri.” Nick said sympathetically, trying not to laugh at what
his friend was saying.
“So what’s up?”
“Well, while I was at the mall, I met these girls and I was wondering if you wanna
go on a double date with me Friday night.” Nick said.
“I don’t know Nick...”
“Please Bri? You can uh, get in the swing of things for Em.” Nick propositioned.
Brian sat on his end in deep thought. He didn’t want to date another girl. He wanted
Emily. What if Em went to the movies the same night and saw him there, then what
would she think? She would never say yes to going out with him if she saw him with a
girl and then he asked her out. The possibilities flew through his head. What should he
say?? “Come on Bri, you know you want to. If you don’t like this girl who cares? Right?
We’re never gonna see them again anyway, they’re in town for this week only.” Nick
said making things up as he went along. Kaity sat next to him on the bed listening
intently to everything Nick said. He seemed to be doing a pretty good job.
“Alright man, one date. I guess I can do that. What’s this girl look like?” Brian
asked. Kaity saw Nick break out into a smile and give her a thumbs up sign.
“Not tellin Bri. You’ll have to wait till Friday to find anything out about her. Meet
me here at my house say...7ish. K? See ya then Frick!” Nick said pressing the talk
button to disconnect Brian. “One down, one to go. Your turn.” he said handing the
phone to Kaity. Kaity quickly dialed Emily’s phone number.
“Hello?” Emily answered.
“Em! What’s shaking???”
“Nothing really, I was just sitting here watching TV, what are you
doing?”
“Nothing...just hanging. Hey I was wondering something.”
“Yeah?”
“Remember those guys I was telling you about? The two that I met at the mall
last week?” Kaity asked. She never met any guys at the mall, but she knew that Emily
would never admit to not remembering something Kaity told her so she just made it
up.
“Yeah I think I remember.” Emily said unsure.
“One of them called me and wants to know if I want to go to the movies on Friday
and if I could bring a friend for his friend. I automatically thought of you. Wanna go with
me? You don’t have to expect anything from his friend, he has a girlfriend, I just don’t
wanna go alone.” Kaity spit out. It took Emily a minute to comprehend what her friend
had just asked her but after thinking it over she decided.
“Sure, if he has a girl then I have nothing to worry about. God I wish Bri felt
something for me. But what can I do right?”
“Right, so you’re in?”
“Yup I’m in. You gonna pick me up??”
“Yup, I’ll be at your house at 6:45...I’ll help you with the final touches. K?” Kaity
asked.
“Great. I’ll talk to you later chica.” Emily said.
“Adios!” Kaity finished hanging up. “Done.” She said smiling at Nick.
“That should be one interesting night.” Nick said.
“Yeah, tell me about it.” Kaity said as she laid down next to Nick on the bed. He
rolled over and propped himself up on his arm and looked down at her.
“Why didn’t we do this sooner?” He asked aloud.
“Cause we were scared.” Kaity answered him truthfully.
“What were you scared about Kaity?” Nick asked as he took hold of her hand.
“Truthfully?” she asked and Nick nodded. “Losing the best thing that ever
happened to me.” she said looking into Nick’s eyes.
“Now I know that you are not talking about me.” Nick said giving a nervous
laugh.
“Yes I am. Nick, you were the only person that I knew when I was a kid. I was
shy, you know that. You have been my best friend for eleven years. If I told you how I
felt, I thought that maybe you wouldn’t take me seriously, think I was joking around. Or,
that you would know I was serious, feel differently, and get all weird around
me.”
“I know what you mean. I was so afraid I would lose you, that you would change
once I told you how I felt that I wouldn’t be able to go to you with things
anymore.”
“Hey, let’s stop going over the past huh? We told each other, we both feel the
same, let’s just go from here.” Kaity said.
“Yeah, who cares how long it took us to realize we were made for each other.
Let’s just...go with it.” Nick smiled and leaned down to kiss Kaity again. His lips met
hers in a sweet, slow kiss. While kissing Nick, Kaity pondered what this would
eventually lead to. What if Nick wanted something to happen tonight? What if even
though he told her that nothing would happen, he secretly thought that Kaity would give
herself to him? The two of them laying on his bed in an empty house was doing nothing
to convince Kaity that the Nick was going to behave. Kaity came to the conclusion that
the only way she would be able to keep Nick, like all other men, was to give him what
he wanted. Even though she was scared, if he wanted her tonight she would give him
just that. Every kiss Nick gave was sweet, and gentle, but right now she told herself she
just wanted to feel him. She moved her hands to the back of Nick’s head and pulled his
mouth down hard on hers. Nick’s eyes flew open as she kissed him with extreme force.
He didn’t think that Kaity was ready for anything sexual, but with the way she was
kissing him, it made him rethink his decision. Nick decided to go with it as far as he was
comfortable with and kissed her back with the same force she used on him. He darted
his tongue out to glide over Kaity’s lips which parted to allow him entrance. As his
tongue lightly massaged Kaity’s, she ran her hands through his soft blond hair. Again
those new feelings were sprouting deep inside Nick, but he knew exactly what was
happening to him. At this point, having Kaity wrapping her fingers in his hair, pressing
her entire body to his, was turning him on beyond belief. He didn’t care what they were
doing or what was happening to him, he just wanted to keep this feeling alive. In the
back of his mind, though, he knew that continuing with their actions would be wrong. He
had to stop thinking like a guy, and start thinking of Kaity, how she would feel. As these
thoughts passed rapidly through Nick’s mind, Kaity untangled one hand from Nick’s hair
and began to move it down his back, lower, and lower. Nick continued to kiss her but as
her hand reached the waist of his jeans he abruptly pulled away. Kaity was left mid-kiss
staring confused up into Nick’s eyes. He looked at her in shock and then saw the
innocent look on her face and his eyes softened as he realized that she was
scared.
“Baby, what do you want to happen?” He asked her quietly. She just looked back
at him, her eyes telling all. Nick could see that she didn’t want anything to happen, that
she wasn’t ready. She was shaking so hard that Nick could feel it and he knew that she
was doing this for him.
“I-I...” Kaity began but Nick quieted her by placing his index finger on her lips.
“I don’t want to do this. We are not ready.” Nick said firmly yet gently. Kaity just
looked back at him with relief and bewilderment. Now she was confused. Weren’t guys
supposed to want to sleep with girls? Did this mean that Nick didn’t want
her??
“I thought that you wan-”
“I do want this to happen, eventually. Just not tonight. Baby, we aren’t even an
official couple yet. I want to wait a while.”
“So it’s not that you don’t want me...”
“Of course I want you Kaity, I have been dreaming of having you for so long, I
just don’t think that at this point in our relationship, that we should make that step.”
Kaity broke out into a smile.
“I am so stupid...” she stated.
“Why because of what you did Kai-”
“No not because of that. Nick, I went years considering you my best friend, and I
never actually knew what a good guy you were. I’m just...glad that you’re mine.” She
said shyly.
“Hers.” Nick said to himself. “Ten years of pining over her and finally she is mine
and I am hers. She had said it herself. I am hers.” He thought.
“What’s going on in that head of yours. You’re smiling like a kid on Christmas.”
Kaity said giggling. That giggle sent shock waves right to his heart. Nick’s eyes met
hers and he smiled even more.
“Finally.” Was all he said kissing her lightly on the lips once more before pulling
her into his arms, as he laid back on the bed. The two held each other tightly before
slowly, each of them fell asleep whispering quiet ‘goodnights’ to one another.
The next morning came quickly. Kaity awoke to a bright light shining in her eyes,
and a warm lump next to her. Opening her eyes, she realized that she was still in Nick’s
bedroom, the sunlight streaming through his open window, and the warm lump next to
her was Nick. Looking up at him she smiled. That was her man, bedhead and all. He
breathed a deep sigh and repositioned himself so he was curled against her, one arm
draped across her stomach holding on to her, and a deep sleep took him again. Kaity
laughed lightly. She was laying in the same bed that she had slept in dozens of times,
with the guy that always slept next to her but now, things were totally different. She felt
things for this guy now that she had never felt before. Up until the night before, dating
Nick occurred only in her fantasies, and now not only did she know that Nick shared
the same feelings for her that she felt for him, but she was also wrapped in his arms
that morning watching him sleep. The only word she could think of to describe the
situation was ‘ironic’. Nick moved again, tightening his grip on Kaity. She watched his
face as his eyelids fluttered a bit before slowly opening. He gazed down at her and
smiled before burying his face in her neck, gently kissing the soft skin below her
ear.
“I thought it was a dream.” he whispered into her ear. Kaity smiled before gently
taking his face in her hands to bring his mouth to hers for a soft kiss. He pulled back
and looked into her eyes. “Will you be my girlfriend? Exclusive...just you and me.” he
whispered. She smiled and nodded her head.
“Of course.” she said causing Nick to kiss her again.
“Kaity, you have to believe me when I say, that I have never felt this way before.
I didn’t know feelings this strong existed.” he said in one breath.
“I know, same here. I better be going though. Friday is coming quick and I have
to pick out what to wear.” She said laughing.
“You will look beautiful in anything you wear.”
“Okay then, I have to pick out something for Emily to wear.” she said
smiling.
“Are you trying to tell me that you want to leave?” Nick asked giving her a
cheeky grin.
“No, I don’t WANT to go, but I do HAVE to go. I have to get home, shower, get
dressed, and then pick Em up to go shopping and buy her something blue.”
“Blue?”
“Blue? Brian’s favorite color?” Kaity asked lightly smacking Nick on the side of
the head. “Come on buddy, you sure do know your best friend well huh?”
“Hey, I know, him, I don’t analyze him.” He said getting out of bed and helping
Kaity up. The two walked downstairs and out the back door.
“You gonna call later?”
“Nope, I’m gonna visit later.”
“Okay, I’ll see you then sweets.” Kaity said as she stopped to pull Nick into a
kiss. He kissed her back affectionately before Kaity pulled away.
“Bye.” Nick whispered as he let her hands go. She walked through the gate
connecting the two properties. Nick watched her walk into the house before turning
around and walking back inside his house.
