Chapter Three

Kaity pulled into the driveway of her big white house next to Nick’s. From where she parked her car, she could see the basketball court in Nick’s spacious backyard, occupied by Nick and Brian. As she closed the car door, Nick looked over and waved to her. She waved back as Nick began to jog over to where she was standing. She watched his muscles tense as he ran. Why did her best friend have to be so hot?

“Hey baby!!” Nick said before he could catch himself. This was her...this was the girl he wanted. Now if he could only get up the courage to ask her out...

“Hi Nick.” Kaity replied a little surprised at him calling her ‘baby’, but she didn’t comment about it.

“Baby?” Brian thought as he walked up to Nick and Kaity greeting each other, shaking his head. “And she lets him call her that? When did this start?”

“Hi Rokster.” Kaity said.

“Hey Kait. How’s it going?”

“Pretty good, and you?” Kaity asked ask.

“Great!” Brian said smiling as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other. Kaity eyed him suspiciously.

“And you would be ‘great’ because...??”

“Oh no reason. Right Nick?” Brian asked.

“He’s happy becaus-” Brian elbowed Nick in the stomach. Kaity looked at them strangely again before brushing it off. She gave Nick a ‘tell me later’ look before she opened the back car door and pulled out her bag.

“Wanna come over?” Nick asked in a childish voice.

“Sure. I guess so, can I go and change first?” She asked as she pointed to her school uniform, a short plaid skirt that showed more of her legs than she liked, and a tight almost see through white button-up shirt.

“Why, of course,” Nick said as he looked her up and down liking what he saw, “but I have to say I am more partial to the uniform...damn!” He finished giving her a little laugh.

“I’m leaving soon.” Brian interjected.

“She can still come over.”

“I know, I just thought I’d let her know.”

“Okay, boys, I’m going inside now. You can continue this little discussion here, or you can wait for me at Nick’s house, your decision. I’ll be over in just a sec okay Nickers?”

“Sure.” Nick replied as Kaity unlocked the front door of her house and walked in.

“What the hell was that all about?! Babe, and he likes my uniform? God, he is such a guy.” Kaity said to herself as she ran upstairs to change.

“Let’s go!” Nick said as he grabbed Brian’s arm and began to bounce his way back to his house.

“Why are you so peppy?”

“What? Can’t a guy be happy that his best girl is coming over?” Nick asked as he led Brian upstairs to his room. Nick walked over to his dresser and pulled out a clean shirt and pulled the one he had on off and slipped the clean one on.

“Best girl?”

“...my best friend who happens to be of the female species. Kaity...ringing any bells up there?” Nick asked as he reached for his comb and gel and began to fix his hair.

“Nick, I know who you were talking about, just because I look stupid doesn’t mean that I really am. I was referring to the terms ‘baby’ and ‘best girl’ that you used with Kaity, and the fact that you are now fixing your hair and.. * cough! cough! * using a lot of cologne.” He finished as Nick set his ‘Polo Sport’ cologne bottle down.

“What? Too much?” Nick asked as he smelled his shirt. “Nick!!! I’m guessing Kaity’s coming over again right??” BJ, Nick’s sister screamed from the hall. “ I can smell you out here!!”

“Shut the hell up!” Nick screamed back.

“You like her!”

“Huh? Like who?”

“Who do you think??....you have the hots for her!” Brian said smiling.

“Who? My sister?! Woah man, that’s just.. WRONG!” Nick said offended.

“Okay, Nick, I think we should sit down, that stench must be affecting your brain.” Nick sat down and looked confusingly at Brian.

“What are you talking about Bri?”

“You like Kaity?”

“I do?”

“No! I am asking you, not telling you. Jesus Nick, what the hell is in that cologne!?”

“Are you asking me that for real?” Nick asked.

“Ugh!” Brian said as he whacked Nick on the head.

“Ow man! What the hell was that for?!”

“You’re acting like an ass, I asked you a simple question...do you like Kaity?” Nick looked at Brian and began running his hands through his freshly styled hair.

“Do I tell him I like her? Or do I just look at him like he’s insane? God! I can’t do this anymore!’” “Yes.” he said quietly, feeling like a weight had been lifted off his chest. All Brian could do was look at him.

“Really?!” Brian asked surprised, finally finding his voice, he hadn’t expected Nick to tell him the truth.

“Yeah, really.. Wow it feels different now that someone knows. Kind of-”

“Relieving?”

“Yeah, that’s it. But.. no one knows but you and I would like to keep it that way. Please.”

“Sure...but you know that you should follow your own advice?”

“Yeah...no shit. When I was lecturing you, I was basically lecturing myself in the process. How do you think I should tell her?”

“Well she is coming over here so why don’t you just show her?”

“What do you mean, like...kiss her? Or something?”

“Kissing is good.”

“Yeah it is...” Nick said imagining what it would be like to kiss Kaity. Brian noticed Nick get a glazed look on his face.

“Nick? Yoo-hoo? Frack!” Brian snapped his fingers in front of Nick’s face and Nick finally blinked.

“Huh?”

“Tuned out for a sec huh buddy?” Brian asked giving him a knowing smile. “I know how it goes, thinking about Kaity. Right?” he finished as there was a knock at Nick’s bedroom door.

“Damn! That’s her! What am I going to do?!”
