Chapter Two
“Hello?” he asked breathless hoping his best friend, Kaity, his secret crush was on the
other end.
“Um ..hi Nick, its Emily.”
“Oh, hey Em, uh Kaity isn’t here if that’s who you’re looking for.” he said.
“No, actually, I was looking for Brian, he called me earlier and he wasn’t home when
I called him back. By any chance is he there?”
“Yeah, he’s here, hang on a second.” Nick said as he held the phone against his shirt.
“BRIAN!” he yelled to his friend who was bouncing a ball on the basketball court.
“Yeah?!” Brian answered as he ran towards the house.
“You have a phone call.”
“Who?”
“Emily.” Nick said wiggling his eyebrows as he muted the phone. “Why is she calling
here to talk to you??”
“Because I called her earlier, now gimme the phone.” Brian said blushing as he
reached for the phone, which Nick conveniently raised over his head to keep Brian from
getting it. “Come on Nick!” Brian whined jumping for the phone and missing.
“Why did you call her earlier??” Nick asked intrigued.
“Because I did.” Brian said through clenched teeth. “Why do you want to know?
Please can I have the phone??”
“Nope...tell me and maybe I’ll let you talk to her?”
“NICK!!”
“Yes?” Nick asked.
“Quit being a smart ass and hand over the phone...NOW!!” Brian said.
“What are you gonna do?” Nick said as Brian punched him in the stomach. Nick
leaned forward in pain and Brian grabbed the phone from his outstretched hand.
“Hey Em!” He greeted her cheerfully. Nick eyed him before whispering ‘you’re gonna
pay for that’ under his breath.
“Hi Brian, you called?”
“Yep!”
“What’s up?”
“Well, I wanted your opinion on something.”
“And, what would that be?”
“Okay, so you remember how I told you that my mom’s birthday is in two days...?”
“Yeah...”
“I was wondering if you could give me your opinion on what to get her. A sweater?
Or should I get her something more...personal?” Emily thought for a minute.
“Wait a sec!! Didn’t you tell me that you were writing a song in honor of your mother
for the next album?”
“Yeah..” Brian said catching on.
“How far are you on it?”
“I have most of it done, if I could finish is within the next two days...I could give her
the written copy of it as a birthday present! Thanks Emily!”
“Hey, no problem! Glad I could help.”
“I owe you one.”
“Nah, it’s on me. I gotta let you go though, call me again some time.”
“I’d be happy to. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Yeah, see ya.”
“Bye!” Brian said pressing the ‘off’ button on the phone.
“Okay, spill it now. You better have a damn good reason for punching me in the
stomach, a little excited that Emily called?” Nick said as Brian placed the portable phone back
on the base.
“No, why would I be excited?” Brian said casually, doing nothing to hide the gigantic
smile plastered to his face.
“Brian, you’re my best friend, you can tell me, I already know that you have the hots
for her.” Nick said as the two of them went back outside.
“Oh you do, do you? And how would you know that?”
“So I’m right?” Nick asked.
“Maybe.”
“Oh come on, Frick, just tell me.” Brian just smiled again. “Ugh!! You are driving me
nuts! Fine, I’m just going to go and call Kevin to see if you like her..” Nick said as he
turned around and headed back into the house.
“NO!” Brian protested, grabbing Nick’s arm. “All right! I like her! Okay?”
“See I knew it. Why didn’t you just tell me?” Nick asked. “At least one of us can admit
his true feelings for a girl.” he thought to himself.
“Cuz I had to piss you off...you pissed me off.”
“Oh that’s mature.”
“And holding the phone over your head so I can’t reach it is normal twenty year old
behavior?!” Nick just rolled his eyes.
“So, fill me in on this thing with Emily.”
“There is nothing to fill you in about. Nothing has happened.”
“You mean you haven’t asked her out or anything?” Nick asked puzzled.
“What? Do you just expect me to call her up and ask her to go to a movie?!”
“Brian, that’s how things work, the guy calls the girl and asks her on a date.”
“Well, I still...I need time!” Brian said.
“Don’t we all?” Nick questioned himself again. “What for?” he said outloud.
“I have to find out what Emily thinks of me. If she likes me. If she does then I’ll gladly
ask her out the first chance I get, but until then, please don’t tell anyone that I like her.
Especially Kaity!” Nick just shot the basketball at the net. “Nick?”
“What?”
“Promise me that you won’t tell Kaity.”
“Bri, I can’t do that. You know that I tell her everything. Besides, what difference does
it make? If I tell Kaity that you like Emily, maybe Kaity will know if Emily likes you. Did you
ever think of that?”
“Yes I’ve thought of that, but I don’t want to ..to ..Okay listen to me Nick, this may not
make any sense. I don’t want to take that risk. I like Emily a lot, but she is still one of my best
friends. If she finds out that I feel ‘that way’ about her, I might lose her if she feels different. I
don’t want that. I like it the way it is now.”
“Buddy, I’m in the same boat as you” Nick
thought.“The way it is now? You mean spending hours with her while we all hang out at
Kaity’s? Just sitting next to her and knowing that you can’t have her? Putting yourself
through hell every time that she mentions how ‘hot’ some other guy at school is?! Seeing her
out with other guys, holding their hands’, kissing them. You could have her! If you would
just take that chance and make a move, maybe you would be able to sit there with your
arms around her, and listen to her tell Kaity and I how cute you were when you did
something stupid! You could hold her hand and be the one kissing her.” Nick said.
“But..”
“Brian! Life is about taking chances. I mean, you took a big one the day you flew
down here to join BSB. You followed you heart, and look where it got you, happiness. Just
follow your heart again and everything will work out.” Nick finished. “What the hell am I
doing?! I should be doing exactly what I’m telling Brian to do?!” He thought. Brian just
looked at him, trying to take in every word he said and make sense out of the situation.
“You’re right. I don’t want to just watch her fall in love with someone else. I want to
be that person she loves. Will you help me?”
“You know I will.” Nick said patting his best friend on the back as he shoved the
basketball into his arms. “Now...one on one!”
